Jessner Peel: A Chemical Peel for Melasma, Skin Texture, and More

You’ve applied sunscreen to save yourself from sun damage, you’ve invested in luxury skin care products, but you’re still not seeing the results you’re hoping for. It may be time to elevate your skincare game with a chemical peel. Enter the Jessner peel, known for its ability to improve your skin's overall clarity, tone and texture.

What is a Jessner peel?

With chemical peels on the rise, knowing which one is best for your skin requires a lengthy process of elimination. The highly regarded Jessner peel is a non-invasive option for skin resurfacing which has become an incredibly popular method of treating typical skin issues.

What are the benefits of a Jessner peel?

If you’re seeking a remedy for hyperpigmentation, anti-aging, or acne scars, the Jessner peel might be just what you’re looking for. The Jessner peel is a great maintenance tool for the work you’ve been putting into your skin. It can also address issues like laxity, wrinkles, and other aging concerns.

Jessner peel vs other chemical peels

The Jessner peel is unique in that it is often recommended for people who are navigating melasma and anti-aging concerns. Since it helps reduce the appearance of larger pores, and helps the tone and texture of the skin become more radiant and softer to the touch.

What is Jessner’s solution?

We love a concoction in an amber bottle. Not only does it give us a timeless apothecary-esque look, but the chances of something wonderful being inside is higher than normal. Jessner's solution combines various chemicals like lactic acid, salicylic acid, and ethanol to target blemishes, acne concerns, and overall reduction of rough texture on your skin.

At-home Jessner Peel vs an aesthetician’s peel

The ultimate hope is that however your chemical peel is applied, it’s done so safely and with efficacy. DIY chemical skin peels can be dangerous to use at home without the guidance of a professional. Aestheticians take courses to learn the exact method of application, pre-session care, and post-session care at home.

Your aesthetician knows what symptoms to look for, how to intervene, and how to guide your skin to getting back on the right track. DIY chemical peels present a dangerous set of choices and scenarios that can be avoided by simply booking an appointment with your aesthetician. When you go into the studio for a chemical peel, you’ll be given the proper strength of the acid chosen. And you might notice that the effective application of having a professional layer on your chemical peel makes a world of difference.

How does a Jessner Peel work?

Weighing in as a medium depth peel, the Jessner’s peel operates by dissolving dead skin cells from the epidermis or the top layer of your skin. It also removes dead skin cells from the dermis which is the upper portion of your middle layer of skin.

Preparing for your appointment

Before your Jessner peel appointment, your aesthetician may run through your past and current skin concerns to clear you and make sure that you’re eligible to safely receive the treatment. It’s also possible that you receive a step-by-step skin care plan that you follow for a few weeks leading up to your appointment.

What to expect during the appointment

During your appointment, your aesthetician will start with cleansing your skin to remove any oils or debris from your face. Goggles or an occlusive product around the eyes may be used to keep them safe while the chemical peel is applied. Then using a brush or cotton square, your skin will be treated by your aesthetician applying the Jessner peel.

You may feel some “stingling” or a slight burning sensation, but this is common your aesthetician will typically have a fan to keep you comfortable during the treatment. . After around 3 to 5 minutes, your aesthetician will neutralize the peel, and apply a calming post-procedure product and spf protect your newly peeled skin.

Aftercare and recovery

After your appointment, you may notice a lingering stingling for the next few hours after leaving the appointment. This is not uncommon. Over the next few days you will begin to notice the peeling process beginning, which may last up to 7 to 10 days from start to finish with the majority of peeling typically occurring days 4 through 7.

Over the next week it will be important to avoid excess heat, sun and sweat and follow the post-care instructions provided by your aesthetician. You may notice some redness for a little while so make sure to talk with your aesthetician if you have issues such as rosacea, or any concerns after your appointment. After around 10 to 14 days, your skin will be healed and you’ll be able to see the results of your first appointment.
