The Wonderful Benefits of Eyebrow Waxing

We love a prominent brow. Loud, statement-making, caterpillar fuzzy, perfect brows. While there’s plenty of room for the unhinged, unkempt “California brow” styles, we’re cleaning up our act with a little knowledge drop on eyebrow waxing.

What is eyebrow waxing?

For those of us who haven't had our eyebrows waxed, here’s a little crash course. Eyebrow waxing is exactly what it sounds like, determining a shape that you love and waxing the surrounding hairs outside of that shape.

What are the benefits of waxing your eyebrows?

Getting your eyebrows waxed might feel like a bit of a chore at first, but it’s packed with some unique benefits. Waxing consistently provides your brows with an excellent shape. It gives you the chance to create a little more precision and sharpness. It also takes longer for your brow hair to grow back, and when it does return it grows back softer, providing a more controlled regrowth environment.

Eyebrow waxing vs threading

Knowing the difference between waxing and threading can help you decide which process is best for your needs. Waxing is, of course, when the wax is applied directly to the skin, and is either pulled with a wax strip or on its own, pulling your eyebrow hairs out directly from their roots. On the other hand, eyebrow threading is a nod to an ancient hair removal technique that originated in India. The skin is held taut as a thread coated in antibacterial wax is twisted, making a tiny lasso that pulls your hair straight from the follicle.

What to expect from a brow waxing appointment

Getting your eyebrows done can be a solo adventure, a little time you have with yourself. Or if you’re having a spa day with some friends, scheduling an eyebrow wax can be a great part of the rotation. Whether you’re flying solo or enjoying an afternoon full of self-care with your friends, it’s important to know what to expect from your brow waxing appointment.

How the process works

Getting your brows professionally waxed is great for a lot of reasons, mostly because you’re in good hands and a trained professional with a keen eye for detail will be helping you achieve your brow dreams. Typically, the area will be cleansed and sanitized, followed by a magnifying light pointed to your face to help your esthetician see your brow hairs closely.

Your aesthetician may use a magnifying light to see your brows up close and will talk with you about the shape of your brows, volume, and style. Your brows might be trimmed and once the wax is brought to the proper temperature and consistency, it will be applied and pulled. Afterwards, they may perform some tweezing for shorter hairs to create a more finished look. You may experience mild discomfort briefly, and a post treatment ointment will be applied for soothing. And don’t worry, it gets easier each time!

Eyebrow waxing aftercare

After your appointment, make sure you set your skin up for successful healing. Use an SPF daily, avoid exfoliating the waxed area, plucking stray hairs, or using retinol products. Keep the area moisturized and hydrated. Wait about 24 hours before you wash the treated area and if your skin is a bit irritated, apply a cold compress.

How often should you get your eyebrows waxed?

The average person tends to get their brows waxed every 4 to 6 weeks. This gives your eyebrow hairs enough time to go to the proper length between visits. The longer the hair the easier and more adaptable the shape of your brow becomes.

Services to combine with eyebrow waxing

We're loving this golden era of self-love and “treat yourself” vibes. Outside of waxing, there are a few add-ons to consider, especially for anyone who’s looking to switch things up a bit.

Eyebrow wax and tint

When you’re getting your eyebrows waxed, your aesthetician might give you some options for add-on services. One of the most popular add-ons, and for good reason is eyebrow tinting. Tinting is when your esthetician creates a custom blend color and applies it to your brow shape to make your brows look a little more polished and organically full.

Eyebrow lamination with wax and tint

In addition to wax and tint, eyebrow lamination has been a huge hit in the brow world for the last couple of years. Think of brow lamination as a perm for your eyebrows. It’s a simple enhancement of the hair you already possess and stylizing them to appear a little bolder, fuller, in a set shape for several weeks.
