How Does Blue LED Therapy Help Treat Acne?

Updated: Aug 23, 2022

For some, acne is a pesky skin concern that pops up with even small changes to our daily routine or diet. There are plenty of treatments that claim to get rid of acne for good, but few have real results to back it up. At LUXE Aesthetics, we use clinical skincare treatments that are personalized to treat your skin concerns and address your stubborn acne. Skincare treatments such as blue LED light therapy and a great at-home skincare routine can help keep skin radiant, healthy, and acne-free.

What is blue LED light therapy?

Targeted blue LED light therapy benefits your skin in a multitude of ways. Blue LED light therapy improves skin texture, hyperpigmentation, and kills acne causing bacteria.

What type of light is blue light?

Blue light is a type of visible light on the light spectrum that has a wavelength between 380 and 500 nanometers. Blue light has the shortest wavelength and highest energy of the visible spectrum.

Clinical treatments that include blue LED light therapy for acne concerns

Several of the treatment options at LUXE Aesthetics include, or can be personalized with, LED light therapy. We use Celluma LED light therapy devices due to their superior quality, multiple FDA clearances (including acne!), and industry leading results.

Other treatments and habits to include in your skincare journey

Anti-aging skin treatments

The best way to protect yourself from UV damage is with a good skincare routine that contains antioxidants like vitamin C and E, green tea extract or other natural ingredients. Skin treatments such as microneedling, chemical peels, and others help to alleviate skin concerns from blue light from electronics. These treatments can also help with skin texture, acne scarring, and a wealth of other concerns that promote healthy, beautiful skin!

The importance of wearing a daily SPF

SPF and moisturizers with SPF help to block out harmful UVA and UVB rays from exposure to sunlight. That’s why it’s important to wear an SPF daily, so you can prevent harmful sun damage. The sun is the strongest source of damaging UV rays that contribute to signs of aging, hyperpigmentation, and at worst, skin cancer. When you're outside, your skin gets a dose of UV rays with exposure, but products such as daily SPF and moisturizers can help mitigate the effects on your skin.

What other devices emit blue light?

The problem with electronics is that they don't come with protections for our eyes. They emit blue light directly into our eyes, interrupting our circadian rhythm and our natural sleep cycle. Poor sleep doesn’t just lead to tiredness – over time, it can show as fine lines and wrinkles on our face.

Here are some common devices that emit blue light:

  • Smartphones

  • Tablets and e-readers

  • Computer monitors and laptops

Turn off the blue light on your phone or tablet at night. The best way to do this is by downloading an app that lets you reduce the amount of blue light emitted from your device's screen. Some apps also have advanced features, such as setting up schedules for when they turn off automatically after certain hours of the day, or allowing you to manually adjust their settings at any time. If you absolutely must check your email or social media accounts before going to sleep, try using a low-intensity night mode instead of full brightness so it doesn't interfere with your body's natural circadian rhythm.
